Placer Sustain is hosting a presentation by the Foothills chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby (CCL), a nationwide non-profit, non-partisan grassroots organization focused on national policies to address climate change. The CCL describes their approach as a “consistently respectful, non-partisan approach to climate education – designed to create a broad, sustainable foundation for climate action across all geographic regions and political inclinations. By building upon shared values rather than partisan divides, and empowering our supporters to work in keeping with the concerns of their local communities, we work towards the adoption of fair, effective, and sustainable climate change solutions.”
The CCL proposes a carbon fee and dividend approach, which is a different approach than cap and trade or a pure regulatory approach. The CCL national advisory committee includes George Shultz (former Secretary of State under Ronald Reagan) and Dr. James Hansen, noted climate scientist and former director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. The CCL will also brief us on the congressional Climate Solutions Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives. By caucus rules, membership must be even between Democrats and Republicans. The caucus has grown to 66 members since its founding less than two years ago.In an environment where it is often difficult to bridge divides, the CCL efforts are an intriguing and welcoming strategy to address a difficult and challenging problem.
Join us to learn about an innovative approach to tackling the issue of climate change. The presentation will be approximately 45 – 60 minutes followed by a 15 minute Q&A. The presentation is taking place in the Beecher Room of the Auburn Placer library with a 6:30 pm start. The library is located at 350 Nevada Street in Auburn.
