Saving the Sierra snowpack by Restoring Mountain Meadows - First Friday Lecture

20 Aside from sheer beauty, the Sierra Nevada mountain meadows may offer a major solution to managing California's challenging water issues by helping to save the Sierra snowpack.

Healthy mountain meadows store water, acting as natural reservoirs that hold back floodwaters. By slowing the heavy spring flows and releasing them gradually over the dry summer months, healthy watersheds can increase the quantity (and quality) of water available downstream.

EDF Climate Corps program

The Environmental Defense Fund has developed a program to help businesses understand - in dollars and cents - how energy efficiency and energy management can save them hundreds and thousands of dollars.   For a period of 10 weeks, from May - September, Fortune 1000 businesses can hire an "EDF Fellow" - a MBA graduate student - who will look at a company's energy data and identify opportunities to save or reduce energy consumption.  For more information visit http://edfclimatecorps.org/

Joel Salatin on Why Food, Farms, and Eating Local Matter

Joel Salatin of Polyface Farm in Virginia was mentioned at the Placer Sustain "Local Food" meeting on August 16th. Salatin is a self-described "environmental capitalist lunatic farmer" and was profiled by Michael Pollan in The Omnivore's Dilemma. He also spoke earlier this year at a Nevada County Grown event. Here is a link to his talk at the Woodstock Farm Festival on "Why Food, Farms, and Eating Local Matter":

Willow Creek Ranch at the Sun City Lincoln Hills Farmers' Market Bizvid

I had the pleasure of meeting Gordon Poulsen of Willow Creek Ranch last week at the Sun City Lincoln Hills Farmers' Market. In addition to a bounty of vegetables, he had big juicy "Triple Crown" berries, a tasty combination of Logan berries, boysenberries and blueberries - and they're definitely on my list of favorites.

PG&E's Thousand Home Challenge

(from the website: http://www.1000homechallenge.org/

Imagine if a thousand homes in North America reduced energy use by 70% to 90%. In some respects, it might seem like only a drop in the bucket compared to the 124 million households in the U.S. and 13 million in Canada. On the other hand, those first one thousand homes achieving deep energy reductions could be the most important milestone in the revolution happening in residential energy conservation.
