Notes on First Economic Development Collaborative Meeting

These are my sketchy notes on the August 10, 2011 Meeting:

  • There was an introductory discussion about the effort that led up to the meeting to explore creating an economic development collaborative in Placer County.
  • PlacerSustain provided input on the ED Board Roadmap calling for an economic development collaborative.
  • D Snyder mentioned that the Roadmap elements called for a ED Collaborative, a Sustainability Learning Center, and I believe Green Jobs/Commerce, all of which were pulled out for implementation priority by ED.
  • Gary Liss mentioned the Town of Loomis effort leading to Sustainable Loomis, and a particular interest in a Green Commerce Directory.
  • Clay Schmidt endorsed the proposition that collaborative efforts increase the leverage and efficiency to PG&E of reaching the public.
  • Brent Smith was supportive of the collaborative effort, and in particular was excited about the ability to expand the type of lending program created by the Town of Loomis to local business. Brent outlined a process used to a collaborative group to address Broadband interests. This type of activity could be employed on other issues by ED network participants.
  • Bralynn Newby endorsed a strong interest in helping and working with small businesses.
  • Jennifer Montgomery was especially interested in efforts that reach the rural homeowners in her district who are somewhat dispersed geographically.
  • Wayne Manning from the Auburn Chamber indicated support and noted that when people come together from different backgrounds have creative solutions. The other Auburn representative indicated that he wanted more information about PlacerSustain.
  • Several comments to the effect that other stakeholders needed to be presented.
  • Brent suggested a meeting inviting other Chambers and jurisdictions to come and present information about what they are doing.
  • There was discussion about kicking off an information forum series while the collaborative is moving along:

    • Input from other organizations working on ed collaboration
    • Ed collaborative sustainability initiatives
    • Buy Local -- Balle Initiatives
    • Local Food Collaboratives

  • Agenda for Next Meeting

    • Mission Goal Statement
    • Stakeholder Identification
    • Collaborative Opportunities Identification
    • Collaborative Framework Communication Architecture and Process
    • Open Event/i.e. first forum.
    • To be located in Rocklin

  • Working Group Level (Get Process Definition from Brent Smith)

Additional Comments:

  1. PlacerSustain has created a Discussion Forum titled "Placer County ED Collaboration." Here is the link. In order to post content you have to create a free account on the website. Creating a new account is fairly straightforward--here is a link to a brief description of how to do that. We have also created a "Sustainable Economic Development" Group which you may join during registration. You may selectively receive all content that is posted to a group. All registered users may post content upon logging in. Let me know if you need help.
  2. The list of possible agenda items for the next meeting is too long. Input on what we should focus on is welcome. In general, I believe we should focus on creating a message about what we are doing and why that could inform an invitation to a larger group of stakeholders.
  3. It would be helpful if we can generate a list of other ED collaborative initiatives that would be examples of the type of effort we are pursuing. Examples that you are aware of would be welcome, and may be posted in the Discussion Forum.
  4. I posted an outline of the types of activities that could be undertaken by a ED group. Here is the link.
  5. I would schedule the next meeting in the first week in September, or so. There is some interest in momentum.
