Feeding the Spirit -- Community Centers and Healthy Food

This is a link to materials on the Center for the Future of Museums about the role of healthy food in creating community--"Feeding the Spirit."  Good links to published materials and videos.  They have a report that sets forth what they believe are the mega-trends that affect doing this work.  The information was brought to my attention by Bob Garrison with the Roseville Utility Exploration Center, a new member of the PlacerSustain Board of Directors.

Donate to Salmon Falls Ranch Project

The American River Conservancy needs our help in acquiring 605 acres west of Salmon Falls Road in the American River watershed.  They are asking us to contribute $50 by April 27.  I donated online at arconservancy.org/donatesalmonfallsranch

As development pressures continue to advance around Folsom Lake, it's very important to invest in our collective open space! Thanks!

Asking for perspectives on an online approach to farmers market

Recently ran across an advertisement for Farmie Market, an online approach to farmers market.  Interested in getting some perspective from the PS community on the potential of the program.  Do you think this supports "buy local" goals?  Does this create more opportunities? or does it take away from the true sense of community?

Thanks everyone!

Michael

Update on Local Food Group Doings

The Local Food Movement group met briefly on October 18, 2011 at 5:00pm before the regular October PlacerSustain monthly meeting.  We took a look at the Mission/Purpose and Principles statement that is being developed for the Placer County Economic Development Collaborative as an example of the type of material that we may develop for the Local Food (including Wellness) Movement effort. [The ED Collaborative material will be published shortly]

Olomana Aquaculture Link - encouraging work for all to take note of

http://www.olomanagardens.com/

We watched an hour long video about this aquaculture farm during our Midwest Permaculture Training at the Sivinanda Ashram Farm in Grass Valley. As the water crisis finally meanders into our global consciousness, this model helps us to realize how useful water is in our day to day lives, and how to make the most of every drop... over and over and over, just as Nature does.

Breakout Groups for Tonight's PlacerSustain Meeting

We will be going into a 45 minute Breakout segment during tonight's PlacerSustain meeting, and would encourage the participants in last month's session to come and continue the dialogue.  Breakout groups will be formed around the subject interests of those attending.  Last month we had the following groups:  Community/School/Church Gardens, Sustainable Human Health, and Local Grower Market and Business Development.

Stopping unwanted catalogues and mail

The organization Catalog Choice allows you to join for free and opt-out of or select how often you want to receive catalogues.  Their list is extensive and I have been using it for months.  It really works and has stopped all unwanted catalogues.  It might seem like a small step but it is a powerful step to save some trees, energy, waste etc.
