Sustainable Communities Journal No. 1--The End of Planning

The title of this essay is intentionally provocative.  We are experiencing the “end” of conventional planning as we know it.  Stated differently, we have reached and passed “Peak Planning.” Conventional planning—plans, goals, policies, objectives, rules and standards, implementation strategies and processes, monitoring, and all the related variations on logical and rationale processes for influencing the future, are useful more formal tools, and here to stay.
